2. THE TOUR OF THE EMPERORS
This TOUR covers the very heart of ancient Rome, Forum, Palatine Hill and Imperial Forums, spanning from the 1st century before Christ to the 3rd after Christ.
The Dictator for life Caius Julius Caesar was assassinated the 15th of March of 44 b. C.: the day of the Ides, in the Roman calendar. After a 13 years civil war, involving Marc Anthony and Caius Octavius, the latter one returned peace to the Roman world, which ceased to be a Republic: that was the start of a new political order that historians commonly define as ‘Principatus’, as the Roman territories became part of the ‘Roman Empire’.
In the Repubblican Roman Forum, by the Temple of the Divine Caesar, your guide will begin with an account of the riots following the death of Caesar. Moving from the place of the funeral you will see the Forum (that is Public Square) made Julius Caesar next to the Republican one, the Tribunal of the Hundred Men (Basilica Giulia), the Senate House, the Domus Publica, the house where Caesar used to live as a Pontifex Maximus; the Sacred Way, where Caesar's legionaires made fun of him during the triumphal march following the conquest of Gaul.
In order to learn about the successors of Julius Caesar (Octavius Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, Titus, Domitian, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus) the Tour will continue throughout Forum, Palatine Hill and Imperial Forums (along the street linking Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum). Pictures with reconstructions will help you appreciate the original aspect of those buildings.
